Description

Delight in these warm, gooey Caramel Apple Cinnamon Rolls made with tender sautéed Granny Smith apples spiced with cinnamon, rolled in crescent dough, then baked to golden perfection and topped with a luscious caramel cream frosting. Perfect for a cozy breakfast or dessert treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Apple Filling

  • 2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter
  • 2 cups diced Granny Smith apples (about 2 medium apples or 200g)
  • 2 tablespoons (25g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Rolls

  • 1 can crescent rolls (8 rolls)

Caramel Cream Frosting

  • 2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup (50g) packed brown sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup (57g) powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the rolls.
  2. Make Apple Filling: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the diced Granny Smith apples, granulated sugar, and cinnamon, then cook until the apples are tender and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let the filling cool slightly.
  3. Prepare Crescent Rolls: Unroll the crescent roll dough onto a flat surface and separate it into 8 triangles.
  4. Fill and Roll: Spoon the cooled apple filling evenly onto each dough triangle. Roll each triangle up starting from the widest end to create individual rolls.
  5. Bake Rolls: Place the rolled cinnamon apple crescents in a greased baking dish or on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown.
  6. Make Caramel Frosting: While the rolls bake, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and the brown sugar together in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the heavy cream and bring the mixture to a simmer, cooking for 2-3 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and whisk in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until the frosting is smooth and creamy.
  7. Drizzle and Serve: Once the rolls are baked, drizzle the warm caramel cream frosting generously over them. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use Granny Smith apples for a tart flavor that balances the sweetness of the caramel.
  • Ensure the apple filling is cooled slightly before filling the dough to prevent the dough from becoming soggy.
  • If you prefer a stronger cinnamon taste, feel free to increase the cinnamon to 1 1/2 teaspoons.
  • The frosting can be adjusted in thickness by adding more or less heavy cream.
  • For a quicker variation, canned apple pie filling can substitute fresh apples but will change the texture slightly.
